This talk will offer a brief survey of cognitive poetics as a critical approach in literary studies with a focus on English literary studies. It will touch on the definitions, scope, main figures, theoretical underpinnings, orientations, connections with other disciplines and the overall relevance and significance of cognitive poetics as a vibrant and rewarding line of inquiry dealing with the cognitive resonances of literature in an era marked with, in Fredric Jameson’s terms, the upsetting of our global cognitive map.
